Netflix recently announced a brand new season of Tiger King and fans have since been wondering if the show’s lead, Joe Exotic, is still in jail.

The streaming giant’s subscribers must hold their breath because it’s time for Joe and his infamous mullet to return to our screens.

“Tiger King is coming back this year — and Season 2 promises just as much mayhem and madness as Season 1!” Netflix rambled in a cryptic tweet.

Is Joe Exotic still in jail?

Yes, Joe, whose full name is Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage, is still very much in jail and it doesn’t look like he is getting out anytime soon.

The 58-year-old former zookeeper, who has been nicknamed ‘The Tiger King’, was reportedly sentenced to 22 years in a cell after being found guilty of a murder-for-hire plot against American big cat rights activist Carole Baskin. He was also found guilty of violating several wildlife laws.

It is a known fact that the Netflix sensation used to oversee a private zoo in Oklahoma and had been feuding with Carole, the CEO of Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida, for many years.

Update on the former zoo operator’s sentence

The latest update on Joe’s sentencing came on July 15 this year when a federal appeals court in Denver stated that he should have received a shorter prison sentence.

A three-judge panel concluded that Joe was wrongfully treated by the court in terms of calculating his prison sentence. The court further elaborated that his sentencing should have been set between 17.5 years and right under 22 years, rather than between 22 and 27 years, which he received.

Finally, the appeals court ordered the convict to be re-sentenced, which could mean an earlier release for Joe, who was convicted of 17 federal charges of animal abuse and two counts of attempted murder for hire in 2019.

Netflix set to release Tiger King season 2

The original Tiger King docuseries premiered in March of 2020 and became an early pandemic hit. Besides a tweet, Netflix released a video on its YouTube channel titled “The Home Of True Crime | Slate Announcement,” which announced new seasons for a plethora of true crime shows including Tiger King.

The video shows Carole walking inside the U.S. Capitol and Joe on the phone while he is in prison. There’s also a billboard in the video asking who killed Don Lewis.

A release date for Tiger King 2 is not set as of now.
