The Death Stranding Director’s Cut has released and those who already own the game on PS4 can now upgrade it on PS5 for a small cost.

Hideo Kojima’s newest and most original IP since Metal Gear Solid is one of the most divisive games of all time. Lots of people enjoy the Norman Reedus spectacle of hiking across wondrous landscapes of greenery, whereas plenty others detest it as a delivery man walking simulator.

Your impression likely won’t change if you didn’t enjoy the game before, but for everyone else there’s plenty to be excited about.

How to upgrade Death Stranding to Director’s Cut

You must own both a PS5 console and the original PS4 version of Death Stranding to upgrade to the Director’s Cut.

If you own a digital version of the PS4 release and already have it downloaded, all you need to do is hover over it on the home screen, press down on your controller and click the three dots. Select View Product and there you should see the option to buy the upgrade.

The good news is that you can also enhance your copy of the game if you own a physical disc. You will need a PS5 with a disc drive, and all you need to do is insert the game, press down, select the three dots to View Product, and purchase the Director’s Cut enhancement.

Upgrade cost

The Death Stranding Director’s Cut PS4 to PS5 upgrade costs £5 in the UK.

It also costs $10 and €10 elsewhere as specified by the PlayStation Blog. Unfortunately, if you own a PS4 physical copy but a digital only PS5, you will need to buy the Director’s Cut for £44.99 or £49.99 for the Deluxe edition.

Both of the above prices are the same if you’ve never owned the game before. It is also a next-gen exclusive meaning it is not available on Sony’s last-gen machine.

Digital Deluxe edition bonuses

Sony fans will be pleased to hear that the upgrade bags them the Digital Deluxe edition instead of just the Standard version.

It comes with the following extra goodies:

  • New in-game suit colours
  • New in-game power glove colours
  • New in-game BB Pod options
  • New in-game backpack patches
  • Digital mini art book + OST app
  • Avatar set
