Former Tottenham Hotspur starlet Elliot Thorpe is heading to Luton Town after missing out on a move to Premier League trio Leicester City, Brentford and Burnley, as reported by Wales Online.

He knew what he was doing.

On Tuesday afternoon, Thorpe took to Twitter to posted a simple emoji – a lone egg timer.

In football-speak that means only one thing – Thorpe was on the verge of joining a new club at last three months after rejecting the chance to extend his Tottenham contract.

Unfortunately for the Cardiff City supporters who flooded his mentions, however, it looks as though Thorpe will be making the short trip from north London to Kenilworth Road instead.

Leicester target Elliot Thorpe rejected a new Tottenham contract

According to Wales Online, Cardiff have been pipped to the post by their Championship rivals after Hatters boss Nathan Jones convinced Thorpe Luton is the place to be.

It’s understood if an agreement can be reached soon, the 20-year-old midfielder could be in contention for his league debut against table-toppers Bournemouth this weekend.

It has been a strange old summer for Thorpe.

Leicester City and Brentford initially expressed an interest in him but a “row” over a compensation fee that would have to be paid to Tottenham soon put paid to those hopes.

Burnley made a bid of their own, the report adds, when Thorpe was still under contract in north London, but it was dismissed out of hand.

A move to Leicester would have seen the Cambridgeshire-born playmaker join forces with Brendan Rodgers, a coach famed for his ability to harness the potential of exciting up-and-comers – football’s own Mr Miyagi.

James Maddison, Youri Tielemans, Harvey Barnes, James Justin, Caglar Soyuncu and Wesley Fofana all made huge strides under Rodgers’ watchful eye at the King Power Stadium.

At Luton, however, Thorpe will get the chance to play regular first-team football – something that would probably have been beyond him at Leicester.
