What If…? episode 7 recap

Released on September 22nd, episode 7 of the series is titled What If… Thor Were an Only Child?

As the episode’s title suggests, this story explores what would happen if Odin never adopted Loki and Thor grew up as the sole prince of Asgard.

When left alone by his parents, the unruly God of Thunder travels to Earth with the Warriors Three to take part in the party of a lifetime, inviting aliens from across the galaxy to join in.

However, the party earns Thor the attention of SHIELD and Carol Danvers (aka. Captain Marvel) is brought in to help deal with the uninvited guests.

What If Episode 7 ending explained

In the end, the escalting conflict between Thor and Captain Marvel is stopped when Jane Foster contacts Thor’s mother, Frigga, who travels to Earth to intervene.

Thor and the partygoers quickly work to tidy up Earth before Frigga arrives and they just about manage it.

With the day saved, Thor goes to see Jane Foster and asks her out on a date. The episode seems to be ending perfectly happily until a new arrival makes themselves known.

As Thor and Jane share a moment, a portal opens up and an army of robots emerges, being led by Ultron but not the Ultron we know from the second Avengers film.

Instead, this is the version of Ultron that would have existed if Vision’s body had been taken over by Ultron rather than Jarvis.

The new arrival doesn’t bode well for Thor or the wider universe as this version of Ultron is in possession of all six Infinity Stones.

Ultron is expected to return

While each episode of What If…? has told its own story, season 1 of the anthology is expected to end with a crossover episode, bringing together the heroes we’ve met so far for one final battle.

The reason for the crossover is that a new foe emerges which threatens the various realities that our heroes inhabit.

That new threat appears to be this all-powerful version of Ultron.

In the recently released mid-season sneak peek trailer, we see a few more shots of Ultron’s army that we didn’t see in episode 7, seemingly confirming that the villain will return as the big bad of the series.

The trailers have also shown What If…?’s heroes joining together to form an alternate version of the Avengers including Killmonger, Star-Lord T’Challa, Party Thor, Captain Carter, Gamora and evil Doctor Strange.
