Will the hit anime ‘Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy’ be renewed for season 2 by Studio C2C and if so, when could the series return to our screens?
Another day, another three Crunchyroll anime series reach the end of their Summer broadcast; Drug Store in Another World, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S and Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy.
The season finale of Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy, episode 12 in the series, is scheduled to release through Crunchyroll premium around the world at 4 PM BST (8 AM PDT/11 AM EDT/11 PM PHT).
However, with fans counting down the hours until the series’ conclusion, we breakdown everything you need to know about the future with season 2.
Has Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy been renewed for season 2?
It’s good news for fans of Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy, the series has been officially renewed for season 2 by C2C.
Whilst news of the renewal is welcomed, it’s not unexpected considering the availability of source material from the light novels and the series’ extremely positive reception amongst fans.
Season 1 episode 12 is expected to roughly adapt up until the conclusion of volume 4 in the light novel series. Thankfully, 16 light novel volumes have been published in Japan, meaning there should be enough source material for up to four anime seasons!
“The score is: 7/10 history, 10/10 art, music especially the op I think are the best and above all apt for this anime, 8/10 character, 10/10 enjoyment, 10/10 overall. I recommend the anime to people who are fans of isekai, comic genre, harem and with OP characters.” – SuntProstMare, via MAL.
Interestingly, as noted by Monsters and Critics, producer of Tsukimichi Nichiion has made a habit of attaching himself to projects with plans for future seasons, including The Quintessential Quintuplets and My Next Life as a Villainess. Similarly, there are rumours that C2C is already working on a second season to their 2020 hit series Wandering Witch.
When could Tsukimichi season 2 release online?
Whilst C2C did announce season 2’s renewal, the production company did not share a targeted release date; however, we can make some predictions based on the production of the recent broadcast.
The anime adaptation was announced in October 2020 and premiered in July 2021, indicating a roughly nine-month production cycle. Work on the second season would also be streamlined, compared to other anime, because of the availability of source material from the light novel series.
Assuming that Tsukimichi season 2 would experience a similar production schedule, fans could see the anime return to their screens as soon as July 2022, again on the Summer slate.
However, there is a possibility that the format of season 2 could shift towards a double or split cour production (three-month broadcasting blocks). A split cour production is more common with series’ that have enough source material available from the start and can be an excellent way to maintain relevance – think of Reincarnated as a Slime as a recent example.
In this manner, Tsukimichi season 2 would likely release part 1 in either Spring or Summer 2022 and return for part 2 on the Winter slate.
Plot for Tsukimichi season 2…
Spoiler warning: This section will discuss the potential plot for the second season of Tsukimichi.
The Tsukimichi anime has been a generally loyal adaptation of the original light novel series, meaning that we do know exactly what will happen in season 2.
The second season is expected to pick up from light novel volume 5, which focuses on Makoto and his companions attending school.
After reaching the school city of Rotsguard Academy, Makoto accidentally takes the teacher’s enrolment exam, instead of the test designed for student admissions.
“He was planning to enrol as a student in the “school” that exists here in order to spread his knowledge about another world. However, the exam that I really took was not the entrance exam, but the teacher employment exam for some reason.” – Volume 5 synopsis, via Fandom.
The so-called ‘Demon Teacher’ starts to become popular amongst students for his revolutionary ideas and emphasis on practicing real combat scenarios, leading to Makoto taking a special group for additional training over the summer vacation.
If you want to read more about the potential plot for Tsukimichi season 2, the light novels can be readily purchased from many online retailers.
