With the finale airing in a few hours, we breakdown what the future could hold for fan favourite anime series ‘Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid’ in season 3.
The return of Kobayashi, Tohru and Kanna in July was what the world needed; the series holds a special place in the hearts of countless anime fans around the world following the arson attack at Kyoto Animation studios in 2019.
The season 2 finale airs in only a matter of hours, exclusively through Crunchyroll on September 22nd at 5 PM BST (9 AM PDT/12 AM EDT) for premium users.
However, as soon as the credits roll, fans will be desperate to know whether or not Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid will return with season 3.
Has Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid season 3 been confirmed?
At the time of writing, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid has not been officially renewed for season 3 by either the Kyoto Animation studio or its associated distribution networks in Japan.
However, fans can be pretty confident that our favourite dragons will return for a third set of adventures thanks to the series’ popularity and availability of source material.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid has become somewhat of a cult classic over recent years, culminating in season 2 scoring an 8.47/10 on MyAnimeList – which is considered ‘very good’ by comparison with over 56,000 reviews.
“There will never be a show like Dragon Maid. I would never imagine that a sequel would make me wanna love the prequel even more. Dragon maid S has been a joy ride for me. I have been waiting every week and watching every second of the show. It feels like I’m in their universe and honestly feels like ik the characters personally.” – Mukho, via MAL.
Popularity is the first hurdle that any anime renewal must overcome, the second is source material i.e., is there enough for another season to be produced or will the animation studio have to wait?
Whilst the anime didn’t necessarily adapt the events from the manga in order, season 2 episode 12 is expected to adapt up until volume 7 from the original series.
The good news for fans of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is that 11 manga volumes have been published in Japan, meaning there is enough source material for at least one more anime season.
Overall, it should only be a matter of time before Kyoto Animations renew the hit anime for season 3, but when could it release?
What date could Miss Kobayashi season 3 release?
As the anime has not yet been officially renewed for season 2, no information on a targeted release window has been shared for Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid season 3.
Unfortunately, predicting a potential premiere date remains difficult because of the history of Miss Kobayashi’s production schedule.
It was announced that Kyoto Animations would again be leading production on season 2 in August 2020, with the hit series returning to our screens in July 2021 – indicating a roughly 11-month cycle.
However, in the aftermath of the 2019 arson attack that tragically took the lives of 36 people, including director Yasuhiro Takemoto, the studio had to significantly reduce the number of projects it could work on.
This is where production on season 3 of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid may be affected, with the studio already planning to work on Free The Final Stroke part 2 in 2022.
Whilst it is conceivable that the hit anime could return again in either July 2022 on the Summer broadcasting slate or October on the Fall schedule: considering the studio’s other commitments, fans should prepare themselves for another long wait before the series returns.
Plot for Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid season 3…
Spoiler warning: This section will discuss the potential plot for season 3, as based on the events from the manga.
The next season of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid will likely open with Kanna’s father ‘Kimun’ entering the human world and wanting his daughter back.
Kimun explains how he is looking for the ‘dragon balls’, as is a human wizard called Azad, and that this could bring about a new world-ending conflict between humans and dragons.
Season 3 would also see Ilulu and Taketo’s relationship reach the next level, causing Tohru’s to pick-up her advancements towards Kobayashi.
However, the two escape to have a private conversation and with Tohru in her dragon form, Kobayashi reveals her true feelings!
Could there be a spin-off series or movie?
Whilst every fan of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid will be desperate for a third season, we may also see the production of a spin-off series or an anime movie.
There are currently four spin-off manga series from the Dragon Maid franchise being published: Kanna’s Daily Life, Elma’s Office Lady Diary, Lucoa is my xx and Fafnir the Recluse.
The most likely option would be an anime adaptation of Kanna’s Daily Life, which at the time of writing has nine published manga volumes in Japan. Producing a spin-off television series would offer a chance to maintain excitement and relevance for the series, similar to The Slime Diaries earlier this year.
Alternatively, Kyoto Animation could opt for a theatrical continuation of Dragon Maid. The recent trend of producing anime movies was accelerated by the box-office success of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. However, other franchises including Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Black Clover and Dragon Ball Super have since followed suit.
Interestingly, two other popular series from the Summer slate have already announced anime movies as their next project, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and My Next Life as a Villainess.
