Some Everton fans have been reacting on social media after Rafa Benitez suggested Lucas Digne did not sustain a serious injury against Queens Park Rangers in the Carabao Cup.

The Toffees bowed out of the competition in the third-round on Tuesday night after losing 8-7 on penalties. A brace from QPR striker Charlie Austin gave the hosts the lead twice, while Digne and Andros Townsend netted equalisers.

Everton have now lost back-to-back games across all competitions after going unbeaten in Benitez’s first five at the club. Aston Villa dealt the Spaniard his first loss as Blues boss on Saturday after winning 3-0.

Digne and Townsend combined to offer Benitez hope of avoiding another defeat when the full-back scored Everton’s first equaliser. The Toffees responded well to Austin opening the scoring, with Digne slotting home Townsend’s ball over the top.

Yet QPR replied within four-minutes, leaving Townsend to drag his side level once more. Reacting swiftly to prod home after Seny Dieng could only parry the ball to the 30-year-old. But penalties would see the Merseyside outfit exit the cup to Championship opposition.

Digne added to Benitez’s pain in London when the Everton full-back sustained a late injury during regular time. The blow forced the 28-year-old – who has been an ever-present part of the Toffees’ Premier League efforts – off after 80-minutes.

But Benitez doubts a serious issue, noting Everton replaced Digne and Andre Gomes as a precaution due to small injuries. He told EvertonTV after the game:

“It was a little problem with the calf for both, so I don’t expect they will be very serious. But just in case, it was best to be cautious with that.”

Everton fans react to Benitez update on Digne injury

However, while Benitez expressed cautious optimism, some Everton fans did not share the Spaniard’s position on Digne’s injury. A few reacted on social media by voicing they expect the 42-cap France international to be sidelined for a while.

Others also noted the lack of alternative options their club have to field at left-back, should he miss many games. Digne has played the full 90-minutes in all five of Everton’s Premier League fixtures under Benitez so far.

The former Barcelona ace is the Toffees’ only senior left-back, while Niels Nkounkou joined Standard Liege on loan this summer. David Unsworth has also been without a recognised left-back with the Blues’ U23s this season after Thierry Small joined Southampton.
