According to BILD, Mainz 05 have a problem with Jean-Philippe Mateta thanks to Crystal Palace and their use of the striker.

What’s the story?

Well, things aren’t really going too well for Mateta right now.

The Frenchman actually started Patrick Vieira’s first Premier League game – the 3-0 loss to Chelsea – as Christian Benteke warmed the bench.

However, that was mainly due to the Belgian’s participation in EURO 2020.

Mateta was benched for the next game, and is yet to play another second of Premier League football under Vieira.

Significantly, the 24-year-old has been axed from the last two Premier League matchday squads, following Odsonne Edouard’s arrival in SE25.

Mateta was a Roy Hodgson signing, and it seems Vieira doesn’t really have any use for him in his system.

When June comes around, the south Londoners can wash their hands with Mateta, although Mainz 05 will have a problem on their hands.

The Bundesliga side had hoped to secure a permanent sale after loaning the forward to England, although it’s had the opposite effect.

Mateta has only started four games for the Eagles, and Crystal Palace would be forced into a permanent move if Mateta makes 15 starts.

BILD add that Mateta had annoyed his teammates in Germany with his constant escapades and big ego.

The German news outlet continue, claiming that Mateta doesn’t fit Bo Svensson’s playing style and a recall is unlikely.

Sadly, the Crystal Palace No.14 is in real limbo, and is now also a problem for his parent side – hopefully, some good can come out of the situation.
