Has the hit anime ‘The Detective is Already Dead’ been renewed for season 2 by Studio ENGI and what date could the series potentially return to our screens?

When thinking back to July 2021 and the first week of the Summer anime broadcasting slate, it’s hard to remember a better opening episode than The Detective is Already Dead.

The premiere was arguably the best episode of the entire season, which sadly came to a conclusion yesterday, September 19th, with the international launch of episode 12.

Now, after fans have been able to digest the finale, many are curious as to what the future holds for The Detective is Already Dead with season 2?

Has The Detective is Already Dead been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, neither the production team behind The Detective is Already Dead nor ENGI animation studios have publicly confirmed the anime will return for season 2.

Anime renewals typically depend on two factors, the availability of source material from a manga or light novel series and the franchises general popularity.

Season 1 of The Detective is Already Dead is expected to conclude by adapting the third volume in Nigoju’s light novel series. Thankfully, there is plenty of source material left to be adapted into more anime seasons, with the franchise only publishing volume 5 in May 2021.

In a 2020 interview, Nigoju also said that the main story will “need at least five or six more books” in order to reach a satisfying conclusion, indicating that The Detective is Already Dead anime series could consist of up to four seasons.

Next, we have the series popularity and to clarify, there are important differences between the domestic and international performance.

Funimation does not publicly reveal their official viewership statistics but it’s obvious that whilst The Detective is Already Dead has become a popular title over the Summer, the series hasn’t reached the heights that many expected after that first epic episode.

At the time of writing, the series is scoring a slightly above-average rating of 6.3/10 on IMDB and 6.52/10 on MyAnimeList, with more than 38,000 reviews.

However, it is the franchises’ domestic success in Japan that can give fans hope that the season 2 renewal may not be a difficult decision to make from Studio ENGI.

Following the anime’s debut, sales for the light novel and manga series skyrocketed in Japan, selling 20,000 copies in the first week of July. If this wasn’t encouraging enough for ENGI, the anime series ranked as the number one ongoing title for 11 consecutive weeks for D-Anime Store!

Whilst the series may not have been overtly successful internationally, the domestic success of The Detective is Already Dead in Japan should be enough to warrant season 2.

When could season 2 release online?

The first season of The Detective is Already Dead was announced in January 2021 and premiered in July of this year, but it’s safe to assume that production had already started a few months prior.

Whilst there is enough source material from the next two published light novel volumes to start production on season 2 of the anime, Studio ENGI will likely wait until volumes 6, and potentially 7, are available.

Unfortunately, a targeted release date for the upcoming volumes has not been shared by either the author or the distribution partners.

New volumes have typically been released in Japan every five months, meaning that there should be enough source material to completely produce a second season by March 2022.

Assuming that The Detective is Already Dead season 2 will experience a similar production schedule to the first and considering the rate that new light novel volumes are published, the anime will most likely return in July 2022 on the Summer broadcasting slate or October 2022 on the Fall slate.

This article will be updated as soon as more information is officially shared.
