West Ham fell 2-1 to Manchester United, with captain Mark Noble missing a stoppage-time penalty which could have secured a point for the Hammers.

The east London side were gifted a perfect chance to level the game in the dying moments as Luke Shaw gave away a penalty for handball. West Ham captain Noble was then introduced to take the spot-kick.

However, despite having an immaculate record from the penalty spot, Noble saw his poor kick saved by David De Gea, a goalkeeper who has been criticised for his poor spot-saving skills in recent months.

Indeed, it was a sucker punch moment for Noble, who could have easily been the hero for his boyhood club had his penalty hit the back of the net.

However, such drama is what the Premier League is made for, and Noble’s miss could be key in both West Ham and United’s fortunes this season. The result put the Manchester giants into the top three of the Premier League table.

The event will taunt Noble, who before today had an astonishingly good record from the penalty spot. With the midfielder coming off the bench to take the kick, as well, it will be some time before the captain gets over the miss.

Yet on social media, West Ham were there to send their support to Noble, with the club posting a message on their official Twitter account to the veteran skipper following his miss against De Gea.
