Speaking on the Where’s Jeff Podcast, Charlie Nicholas has been discussing Demarai Gray’s great run of form for Everton this season.
Nicholas says he’s been watching Gray for years, but he claims that he’s never really come up with the goods at this level, echoing a point Ian Wright made last week.
Nicholas speculated that this was Gray’s last chance at this level, and he says that he’s finally taking his chance to shine in the Premier League.
What’s been said?
Nicholas had nothing but good things to say about Gray.
“I’ve watched this lad, we’ve all watched him for years, and he never really produced, but all of a sudden, Rafa seems to be getting a tune out of him. Maybe he’s realised that this was his last chance at this level. His run through the middle, you know I love my midfield runners, and his finish. Benitez is getting a tune out of him, and a tune out of Townsend,” Nicholas said.
No longer coasting
At one point it seemed as though Gray would never live up to his potential.
As much as we hate to criticise a player this talented, but when he was at Leicester City it often seemed as though he was coasting through games, allowing the stars of the team to carry most of the burden, but that’s all changed at Leicester.
Perhaps it’s the faith Benitez has put into him or perhaps it’s the system he’s playing in, but one thing is for sure, Gray is thriving at Everton in a way he never did at Leicester.
If Gray was in the last chance saloon when he arrived at Goodison Park, he’s certainly on his way out of it.
