Zawe Ashton is a superstar in her own right. Known for her role as the hilarious “Vod” in Fresh Meat, Zawe is also a talented writer and poet.
Here are five things you need to know about the actress, writer, and girlfriend of Loki’s Tom Hiddleston…
1. She’s an actress
Zawe is probably most recognised for her role in Channel 4’s Fresh Meat where she played the role of Vod alongside Jack Whitehall, Joe Thomas, and Kimberly Nixon.
Most recently Zawe has starred in Handmaids Tail as Oona and Claire Pascal in the TV series Wanderlust.
2. Zawe and Tom met during a play
Tom and Zawe reportedly met in 2019 whilst they were starring alongside each other in the West End play Betrayal. In the play they portrayed a strained couple.
In September 2019 a source told The Sun: “Tom really has fallen for Zawe in a big way. They now spend most weekends together and going for long walks with his dog. He thinks this could be the love of his life.”
3. She will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Zawe is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a villain in Captain Marvel 2.
Although her character in the movie is currently unknown, sources have reported that Zawe will be playing the role of the main villain.
4. She’s a writer
Zawe took up performance poetry when she was 17 and in 2000 she won the London Poetry Slam Championship.
In 2006, Zawe was the Young Writer in Residence at the Contact Theatre in Manchester and her first play, Harm’s Way, premiered at the Lowry in Salford in 2008.
Speaking about her writing, Zawe told The Independent: “In terms of writing good parts for women, [writing] doesn’t feel like a choice. It’s the only longevity I can see.”
In July 2021 Zawe was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
5. She’s from Hackney, London
Zawe’s mother came to the UK as a teenager from Uganda, where Zawe’s grandfather Paulo Muwanga had served as both president and prime minister.
Zawe grew up in Hackney with her parents who were both schoolteachers.
Speaking about the area she said: “What’s brilliant about Hackney is that you have always had lots of different people literally living side by side.”
