Alan Shearer has hailed Bernardo Silva in his Team of the Week for the official Premier League website as the shining light for Manchester City after stepping up against Leicester.
The Portuguese broke the deadlock just after the hour mark at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. Leicester were holding the Citizens to a close affair, with Kasper Schmeichel and Ederson making crucial saves at either end.
Harvey Barnes forced a good stop from the Brazilian, while Schmeichel was strong to deny Gabriel Jesus twice. Barnes even clipped the top of Ederson’s crossbar, but Silva lapped up the spoils after reacting first to a loose ball and chipping home from six-yards out.
Silva wanted to leave Manchester City this summer, with The Times reporting he wanted to move to Spain. He has had a gentleman’s agreement to leave in the event of a suitable bid for the last year. But no side offered enough, and the midfielder stayed.
Guardiola will have been delighted to have had the 27-year-old available against Leicester on Saturday. With Silva’s performance earning Shearer’s praise: “The Portuguese was a shining light for Manchester City and was alert when he needed to be to score the winner.”
Silva gave Manchester City more than a goal to earn Shearer praise
Silva impressed Shearer beyond just his goal after delivering a magnificent performance for Manchester City at Leicester. The £150k-a-week playmaker built a strong connection with Jack Grealish and Joao Cancelo, and skipped past Caglar Soyuncu and Youri Tielemans.
He also teed Ilkay Gundogan up for a chance to score in the 14th-minute that needed Ryan Bertrand to intervene. While forcing Schmeichel into regular action to try and maintain his clean sheet. Eventually finding a way past after Soyuncu could only redirect Cancelo’s hit.
Silva has now opened his Premier League account and will look to make another influential display in the Champions League. Guardiola’s side host RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night to begin their Group Stage campaign.
