Many, many years ago, Arsenal were qualifying for the Champions League with ease.

But fast forward to today, and their own representation in that competition is from their ex-players, rather than from themselves.

One of them being Francis Coquelin, who during Villarreal’s 2-2 draw against Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday night, managed to get himself sent off 24 minutes after coming onto the field of play.

Unai Emery, another man who donned Arsenal colours, brought the hard-hitting midfielder into the fray after the hour mark.

At that time, the scores were 1-1 and both teams would score during his brief time on the pitch.

But Coquelin managed to receive two yellow cards in the space of eight minutes, as Arsenal fans loved how he managed to get himself sent off so quickly.

It’s perhaps the Frenchman channelling his inner old Arsenal days because it wasn’t the wisest of moves.

Either way, it also means that he will miss a trip to England and a clash against Manchester United at the end of this month.

In the end, it didn’t cost his side because the scores remained the same and Emery managed to secure a point in his side’s opening Champions League game of the season.

Emery was hired by Arsenal to get back into the Champions League and push on from there – it resulted in him being replaced by a novice in Mikel Arteta.

But whilst the North London club are facing life without Europe for the first time in 25 years, he is chilling with the elite in the biggest domestic competition in world football.

Nonetheless, here is a selection of Arsenal fans reacting to Coquelin getting sent off:
