At this point, we’d be better off making a list of popular performers who aren’t part of the sprawling MCU.

Back in 2008, the cinematic universe was born with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal of Tony Stark was swiftly championed by the masses.

Since then, Marvel Studios has delivered an impressive number of the most financially successful movies of all time, and with that success, it has bought some serious screen talent.

From Chris Evans to Florence Pugh, there are simply so many great actors who have made their mark on superhero cinema. However, with WandaVision marking the MCU’s transition onto the small screen, additional projects have brought in even more of Hollywood’s best.

Audiences were recently treated to a trailer for the forthcoming Clint Barton vehicle and, as anticipated, the cast is pretty stacked. Beyond the usual MCU enthusiasts, The Conjuring fans have a pretty big reason to be pumped too, so who is Vera Farmiga playing in Hawkeye?

Who is Vera Farmiga playing in Hawkeye?

The 48-year-old American actress is portraying Eleanor Bishop, the mother of Kate Bishop (played by Hailee Steinfeld).

To understand Eleanor, it’s important to note that Kate is a 22-year-old fan of Hawkeye who essentially becomes his protégée, training so that Clint feels confident in passing down the bow.

The six-part series will follow the duo as they encounter deadly enemies from Hawkeye’s Ronin past, and to add an extra dimension of tension, the clock is ticking down to Christmas Day and our archer is particularly eager to make his way home.

This is Eleanor’s MCU debut but she has a history in Marvel Comics to help provide some context.

In print she was established as the matriarch of a wealthy Manhattanite family; she had two daughters with Derek Bishop, Kate, and Susan. However, she allegedly died on a skiing trip in Boulder, Colorado, and the daughters were left in Derek’s care.

In a turn of events, she was actually revealed to be very much alive and involved with Madame Masque, who is one of Kate’s deadly enemies.

Den of Geek highlights that Eleanor was first mentioned in Young Avengers Special #1 back in 2006, not long after Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung wrote the character of her daughter.

It wasn’t until 2017 that she made an official and concrete appearance. Fittingly, she was introduced in the 2017 Hawkeye solo series. Details regarding her relationship with Madame Masque were later addressed and it turns out that they were conspiring to target Derek for his potential role in her “death”.

Now, here’s where things get a little wild…

A role to sink her teeth into?

Excuse the goofy wordplay, but yes, it’s time to talk about vampires.

In the comics, it’s hinted that Eleanor’s survival is linked to her being transformed into a vampire by a west coast cult called the Temple of the Shifting Sun.

Kate and her handy gang of Avengers once successfully snuck into one of the cult’s meetings and found them attempting to use America Chavez to bestow upon them the ability to navigate the street during the day.

Kate and her mother discuss their past and Kate can’t help but speculate upon the inconsistencies in her survival story.

Although we can’t see her being revealed as a vampire in the Hawkeye series, the costuming choices already have us intrigued.

“I’M SHAKING”

Vera has earned legions of fans for her work as Lorraine Warren in James Wan’s The Conjuring franchise and has impressed in the likes of Running Scared, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Departed, and beyond.

So, fans are inevitably thrilled to see her Hawkeye role teased in the first trailer. A number of viewers have already taken the time to react on Twitter:

Hawkeye begins premiering on Disney+ on Wednesday, November 24th 2021.
