With a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 88%, it was obvious that Amazon Prime Video’s Upload was a hit among fans and critics alike when it was released in May 2020.
Amazon clearly agreed and the series was quickly renewed for season 2 but since the announcement, updates about the new instalment have been few and far between.
As such, Upload fans have been left wondering about the status of season 2 but just what do we know about the show’s highly-anticipated return?
Upload season 1 recap
Season 1 of Amazon Prime Video’s Upload first arrived on the streaming service on May 1st, 2020.
The series centres on a young app developer, Nathan Brown, who is rushed to hospital after a self-driving car accident left him fighting for his life.
Following a rushed conversation with his shallow girlfriend, Nathan chooses to be uploaded into her family’s virtual afterlife known as Lakeview.
Once Nathan is uploaded into the luxurious digital world, Nathan meets Nora, his customer service ‘angel’ who guides him through the transition but she quickly becomes his friend and confidante.
However, there are dangers even in the afterlife as the circumstances around Nathan’s death remain murky and his relationship with Ingrid becomes complicated as he and Nora develop feelings for one another.
Upload season 2: What we know so far
Upload was renewed by Amazon Prime Video for season 2 on May 8th, 2020, just one week after the series premiered.
Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios was quoted by Deadline, saying: “In Upload, Greg Daniels delivered a smart, cinematic comedy crackling with intrigue and it has clearly delighted our customers who have spent a lot of time in Lakeview this past week.
“We know our global fans want to see the next chapter with Nathan and Nora so we are greenlighting Season Two and are excited that Greg’s passion project has found such a devoted audience.”
Filming on season 2 began in January 2021, with Upload’s Instagram page sharing a photo of the reunited cast on the set of the series. Production continued for several months before concluding in April.
No release date has been announced for Upload season 2 just yet but due to the show’s filming schedule, season 2 is expected to arrive either in late 2021 or early 2022.
Season 1 of Upload was released in May 2020, roughly one year after filming had been completed. If there is a similar wait for season 2, then we could see Upload return in April 2022.
New cast additions
While few details about season 2 have been announced so far, we do know of two brand new cast additions who will be joining Robbie Amell, Andy Allo and Allegra Edwards in the new season.
The first of which is Paulo Costanzo of Designated Survivor and Royal Pains fame, who will be taking on the role of Matteo, a young charismatic leader prone to bouts of self-importance.
Also joining the cast in season 2 is Mackenzie Cardwell who will be taking on the role of Tinsley, a new temp customer service angel at the Horizen Lakeview centre. Mackenzie only made her acting debut in 2012 but already has plenty of roles to her name including appearances in Little Fish, Supernatural and Unspeakable.
Season 1 of Upload is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video while season 2 is on its way.
