Sebastien Frey has likened reported Tottenham Hotspur target Dusan Vlahovic to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but challenged him to show how far he has grown, via TuttoMercatoWEB.
Vlahovic has started the 2021/22 campaign in sensational fashion with three goals in three Serie A appearances. He also netted twice in the Coppa Italia and found the back of the net once with Serbia, while earning his 10th-cap during the September international break.
The 21-year-old has picked up from where he ended last season as the Italian top-flight’s fourth-best goalscorer. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (29), Romelu Lukaku (24) and Luis Muriel (22) outscored Vlahovic (21). While only Ciro Immobile (4) has so far fired home more this term.
Vlahovic’s efforts in the Fiorentina attack last season piqued Tottenham’s interest as they sought to sign a striker this summer. Sky Sport Italia reported Spurs were prepared to bid close to the £60m offered to Inter Milan for Lautaro Martinez.
While their interest fell short, Calciomercato note Vlahovic is Tottenham’s top target for a 2022 transfer. But Fiorentina’s efforts to renew his contract may dictate Spurs’ position, having sought to include an €80m (£68m) release clause, per Grand Hotel Calciomercato.
Fiorentina icon Frey was surprised to see Vlahovic reach his current level so soon in his career. The Viola hero now wants the Serbian to take his promise to another level.
“He can’t be compared to players I’ve played with because he has different characteristics and it’s still early to call him a champion,” Frey said. “But he reminds me a little of Ibrahimovic in the way he moves.
“I don’t hide that he’s amazing because I didn’t think he was already at this level. This year in Florence, with Fiorentina, he has to show how far he’s reached.”
Should Tottenham revive their interest in Fiorentina’s Vlahovic?
Vlahovic enjoyed a seismic rise in the Fiorentina attack last season to catch Tottenham’s interest as they sought forward reinforcements. The 21-year-old more than tripled his output in the Viola attack, after only scoring six goals in 2019/20.
He also failed to score in any of his 10 top-flight outings in 2018/19 following his promotion to the first-team. But found another level to hit 21 in 37 games last term, and already has a one-in-one record this season.
Vlahovic improving on his 2020/21 record to become a ‘champion’ like Frey claims he is not would surely interest Tottenham. Spurs have not been flush with goals under Nuno Espirito Santo and sorely missed a second goal threat on Saturday. Harry Kane was off the pace in defeat to Crystal Palace, struggling to produce with the little service he received.
