“This is some Christmas…”

If the only gift you wanted this year was for Jeremy Renner to channel his inner John McClane in the role of Clint Barton, then it really will be the most wonderful time of the year.

The MCU has achieved blockbuster success ever since Iron Man in 2008 and it has been incredibly exciting to witness a somewhat seamless transition to the small screen as of late.

Things kicked off weirdly with WandaVision and subsequent efforts like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki have ensured audiences that the MCU is just as at home on Disney+ as it is on the big screen.

Reflecting upon the wider cinematic universe in 2021, fans were finally given the long-anticipated solo vehicle for Black Widow, and this certainly left Clint fans wishing for the same treatment.

Fortunately, a trailer recently dropped for the forthcoming series and it looks like we’re in for a treat. Nevertheless, despite some great moments teased, Yelena’s absence has encouraged viewers to ask… is Florence Pugh in Hawkeye?

Is Florence Pugh in Hawkeye?

Yes, Florence Pugh has officially been cast in Hawkeye.

Variety broke the news back in December 2020, announcing that the Midsommar star will be joining with the likes of Hailee Steinfeld, Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Alaqua Cox, and Zahn McClarnon.

Of course, fans can expect her to reprise the role of skilled assassin Yelena, who debuted in Black Widow.

Although she has already been confirmed, it’s hardly surprising that fans began to panic after she was nowhere to be seen in the trailer. However, there’s probably a pretty good reason for having her kept out of it for the time being.

Arguably, trailers should simply show audiences glimmers of greatness but never reveal too much. When you head into a movie or show having seen the trailer, you still want character entrances and shocking moments to feel fresh.

By adding too much into a trailer, you may spoil certain moments for the fans; or, to be less dramatic, dampen their impact.

Many hailed Yelena as a new fan-favourite after seeing her in Black Widow, so perhaps this exciting reunion is something the team didn’t want to tease too early on.

Could it be included in later trailers? We’ll have to wait and see.

Yelena and Hawkeye connection explored

If you’re wondering how Yelena may fit into the TV series then let’s take a moment to refresh our memories.

The Black Widow end-credits scene took place in 2023 and saw Yelena visit Natasha’s grave in Ohio.

As you’ll surely remember, Black Widow essentially sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame so that Clint didn’t have to, no matter how hard Hawkeye unsuccessfully fought to be the one to plummet from the cliff.

Yelena’s mourning of her sister spy is interrupted when Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine – or Val, for short – turns up. It’s suggested that Yelena already works for her as an assassin and Val addresses the fact that she has Yelena’s next target lined up.

Who is it? None other than Hawkeye. Taking this into consideration, it’s likely that he and Yelena will face off in the show at some point, although we suspect Yelena will discover the truth behind Natasha’s death and refuse to orchestrate the hit.

This would be a bullseye

Yelena has quickly become a valued and brilliant member of the MCU and it’s interesting to consider her future as Phase Four blossoms.

While in conversation with the FirstPost, Florence was asked which character she’d most like to share the screen with and replied:

“I’ve always been intrigued by the Scarlet Witch [Elizabeth Olsen]. Just because I really like how equally bizarre she is as well. I think if Yelena were to bump into anyone from the MCU who is just as opinionated and in love of taking the p*** out of every single one of them, then I think she’d probably find Loki [Tom Hiddleston] very interesting because he kind of does that too.”

The chances of Wanda and Yelena encountering one another are pretty high, so count us in for that one.

Hawkeye begins premiering on Disney+ on Wednesday, November 24th 2021.
