It’s a draining blow for the 18-year-old because he has been one of the standouts in this star-studded Jurgen Klopp’s side.

In a team littered with world-class stars, Premier League and European Cupe winners, then it’s some feat for Elliott to ensure quite a lot of that light was shining on him.

Sherwood, who won the Premier League title with Blackburn, shared that people at Ewood Park classed him as a ‘leader’ in the dressing room, as he praised the confidence in his boots.

“He’s so confident,” said Sherwood. “The belief in how good he is. He pulled out of what squad? The under-21 England squad.

“He doesn’t want to play for England under-21’s. He wants to play in the full team.

“He is probably disappointed that he never got called up for the full team when others were getting called up ahead of him. That’s his next step.

“He want to Blackburn last year, I was speaking to people up there at my old club. He was outstanding. He stood up. The leader of that group – like Jack Grealish, the bigger the occasion, the better he is.”

The road to recovery for Elliott starts now and it’s a crying shame such an unfortunate injury occurred as soon as his Liverpool senior career was going to lift off.

But, one thing is for sure, he will have the full support of those around him, including a certain Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman suffered his own horror injury last season and he has now come back a better and stronger player.

Given that Elliott will now leave a void in the Liverpool team, it will be interesting to see who is now pushed into that role he was making his own.

There is Curtis Jones, who was ahead of the Fulham academy product last season, and also the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita.
