Paul Merson has said on Sky Sports News (1:12pm, September 11, 2021) why Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal could make so many signings in the summer transfer window, while Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool did not.
The former Arsenal star has said that the Gunners needed to sign players who would make the team better.
As for Liverpool, the former Premier League and Champions League winners already have strong players, according to Merson.
Merson said on Sky Sports News (1:12pm, September 11, 2021): “If you look at the Arsenal signings, they are going to play, they are going to play.
“So you spend that money and you bring them players in. Ben White, £50 million, he is going to walk in the team, he is playing every week.
“Liverpool could buy a player for £50 million tomorrow morning, he could not get a game, especially if he is one of the forward players. He might get a game every now and then. That’s the problem.”
Merson does indeed make a very valid point.
Arsenal signed Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale among others because they needed to bring in quality footballers.
Liverpool already have a strong squad and made just one major signing in the summer transfer window – Ibrahima Konate.
Of course, every team has room for improvement, but for Liverpool there was no point in spending a lot of money to bring in players only to sit on the bench.
When all the players are fit, it is hard to see how Liverpool could make their current starting lineup better.
You could argue that Liverpool could have signed a number 9, but Mohamed Salah remains one of the most prolific goalscorers in the world.
