Speaking on Sky Sports via Birmingham Live, the Liverpool icon was full of praise for his fellow countryman despite the huge loss for the Midlands side.
McGinn had some impressive moments against the Blues, and Souness had plenty of positive things to say about the Scottish international.
The pundit said: “McGinn is a great player who will only get better. If that was going to be his level for the next nine months, Villa will go off at me for saying this, but big clubs will be looking at him.”
Indeed, there’s no denying McGinn’s quality. The midfielder has been one of Villa’s star performers since their promotion back to the Premier League, with the likes of Manchester United being linked with the Scotsman.
Souness’ comments did cause some controversy on social media amongst Villa fans. However, some supporters agreed that it is likely McGinn could one day move to a big club.
Jack Grealish departed Villa Park for Manchester City after the Premier League champions activated the England international’s release clause.
And on Twitter, some Villa fans believe that something could happen to McGinn following what Souness had to say…

As good as he is and he can be very good at times. The way he gives the ball away is very annoying. If he can sort that part of his game out we will have a decent midfielder.— CJ222 (@BackpostTrez2) September 13, 2021
The fact is that Villa are a selling club, and have been for a very long time. Villa needs to get amongst the top 4 for anything to change.— Monty Bannister (@BannisterMonty) September 13, 2021

You should always look to buy the very best players from the teams below you. That's what we've been doing. Players always want to move up, occasionally sideways for more money and/or more minutes/better relationships etc.— Uptha Villa (@Up_tha_Villa) September 13, 2021
Probably because we always sell them.— Phil Roberts (@iamVilla) September 13, 2021
