Paul Merson stated, during Newcastle’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester United, that if Freddie Woodman ‘doesn’t get’ Cristiano Ronaldo’s shirt then it will worry him, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (11/09/21 at 4:20 pm).

The scene, the script and the bright lights were set for Ronaldo to shine on the Old Trafford stage yesterday, and he did just that by netting a brace on his second Manchester United debut.

Both goals showcased the incredible movement in his game, but Newcastle’s man between the sticks would have felt that he should have done better on both occasions.

Merson was working on Sky and commentating on the game, as he made this hilarious claim about Woodman following Ronaldo’s second.

“Ronaldo’s awareness,” said Merson. “He knows there is a gap. He knows there is something on and he makes a sprint.

“Fair play to Shaw, he plays a through ball to him. His first touch is absolutely phenomenal.

“It’s out of his foot and he hits it as hard as he can, at the goalie’s feet. The goalkeeper should do better, it goes through his legs, but it’s a great run.

“If Woodman doesn’t get his (Ronaldo’s) shirt after the game then there will be worries.”

Make mistakes and the absolute best will punish you and Ronaldo wrote a textbook on that yesterday.

In truth, before Man United got their second, it did seem as though Newcastle were about to spoil their party because it was a toss of a coin as to what was going to happen next.

Steve Bruce’s side continued to be a threat on the counter, with their pace, directness and decision-making proving to be a problem for the home team.

But, in the end, Newcastle, who are yet to win a game this season, couldn’t stop the constant pressure and attacking threat that was being put on their backline.
