Fashion enthusiasts around the world are on the edge of their seats as the date for Met Gala 2021 is inching closer. This year’s theme for the big night has certainly increased the anticipation for the event.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced this year’s theme for the event.
Met Gala 2021’s theme explored
This year’s theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” It is meant to honor the 75th anniversary of the museum’s Costume Institute. The museum further revealed that they also aim to “explore a modern vocabulary of American fashion.”
For the unversed, the term ‘lexicon’ means ‘the vocabulary of a person, language, or branch of knowledge.’
With ‘A Lexicon of Fashion,’ MET aim to celebrate emerging America-based designers. The theme will also highlight the ways in which fashion has played a pivotal role in the creation of historical moments.
In an interview with Vogue in April, Andrew Bolton, the curator behind MET’s Costume Institute, said: “I’ve been really impressed by American designers’ responses to the social and political climate, particularly around issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity, and I’m just finding their work very, very self-reflective.”
Hence, fashion lovers can expect to see a plethora of designs on the MET red carpet this year.
A look at this year’s co-chairs
We already know that the Met Gala 2021 will be co-chaired by personalities like Billie Eilish, 19, Timothée Chalamet, 25, Amanda Gorman, 23, and Naomi Osaka, 23. The co-chairs were announced back in May.
Billie, Timothee, Amanda and Naomi have all made waves in the world of fashion in their own ways. Hence, it will be interesting to see what they bring to the table this time.
Honorary chairs of the event include personalities like American designer Tom Ford, Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri.
