Fans are desperate to know whether the hit Korean drama series Penthouse: War in Life has been renewed by SBS for season 4.

It’s always tough to watch a season finale, but in a world where most shows are binged in a day or two, it’s especially tough when you’ve spent the past three months watching the drama unfold week-by-week.

Today, fans around the world will be saying goodbye to one of the most dramatic K-dramas in recent memory, Penthouse: War in Life.

The series has been a staple of Korean television since debuting back in October 2020 but sadly, all good things must come to an end.

Now, with the finale set to launch in just a few minutes, we breakdown whether Penthouse has been renewed for a fourth season and if not, what those chances are.

Has Penthouse been renewed for season 4?

At the time of writing, SBS has not officially renewed Penthouse: War in Life for season 4, with today’s finale likely being the last time we see any drama from Hera Palace.

On the one hand, the series is easily popular enough to warrant a fourth season, receiving consistently high scores on various user feedback websites, including an impressive 8.1/10 on MyDramaList, 8.2/10 on IMDB and 87% on AsianWiki.

Domestically in South Korea, the series has seen an incredible performance over the past three and a half months, with Penthouse 3 being the most-watched programme in its broadcasting block for the past nine consecutive weeks.

With the finale set to air in just a few hours, the series is sitting at an incredible 17.045% average national audience share, making Penthouse one of the most popular K-dramas of 2021.

Rumours around a potential fourth season have also been fueled by a recent interview with actress Kim So-Yeon, who responded to a question about season 4’s production by saying, “I’ve not been informed about anything yet, I don’t know if it will be or not.”

However, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up just yet, with the main reason for our pessimistic outlook being that throughout the recent promotional campaign for the series, the third season was consistently labelled as the ‘final season’.

In accordance with this view, the cast recently shared their ‘final goodbyes’ to the series. Eugene said that whilst “It was a difficult journey, but I had fun, and the work was full of passion” before thanking writer Kim Soon-Ok and director Joo Dong-Min.

This sentiment was echoed by Lee Ji-Ah, who thanked both the writer and director, explaining that it was also thanks to that love and support that she “gained a lot of strength and was able to successfully wrap up [production].” However, the actress also confessed that the final goodbye had not yet sunk in.

“Because we’ve been filming this drama for multiple seasons, it feels as though after we rest a little, we’ll be starting up again. That’s how much this drama was my everything, and it will remain with me for a long time. Once again, I want to thank everyone who gave ‘The Penthouse’ their unsparing love and support.” Lee Ji-Ah, via Soompi.

Unfortunately, there has already been some confusion online after one media outlet falsely reported that season 4 had been confirmed and would release on February 13th, 2022. As previously stated, the series has not been officially renewed by SBS and no release date information has been shared.

Overall, considering the marketing for season 3 consistently calling this the final chapter, it remains extremely unlikely that the K-drama will return for a fourth season.

This article will be updated if more information on Penthouse season 4 is shared by official sources.

What series is following Penthouse on SBS?

Penthouse 3 will be followed on SBS by One the Woman, a romantic comedy series from director Choi Hyeong-hun.

The series centres around a corrupt prosecutor called Cho Yeon-Joo (Lee Ha Nee) who, after losing her memory in a car accident, accidentally gets swapped for the youngest daughter of a Chaebol, called BK Group.

Han Seung-Wook (Lee Sang-Yoon) is the eldest son of this family and is still heartbroken from his first love, who Yeon-Joo is the spitting image of. After coming back to Korea to find out the truth about his father’s untimely death and inheritance package, he thinks that he has met the love of his life again.

The series premieres on Friday, September 17th and will run for 16 episodes – the series is expected to be simulcast on Kocowa and Viki Rakuten.
