A look at Art Metrano’s accident
Art suffered a household accident in 1989. In a head-first fall from a ladder, the actor ended up breaking his first, second and seventh vertebrae.
As per a story by Ability Magazine, the actor explained that after the fall, he heard his neck break and cried out for help in pain. Art said he screamed in a “voice that wasn’t his own”.
He sustained serious injuries from the incident that limited his mobility. The actor went on to use a wheelchair during his performances after the incident but retired from showbiz in 2001.
Actor’s family pays sweet tribute
Art’s son Harry and his wife Melissa have shared the most heartwarming notes about the late actor on their Instagram accounts, as they have remembered him for what a great man he was.
Harry shared in his post, “He’s fought and won so much over the years that I always viewed him as indestructible, but the truth is we don’t live forever on earth, but a person’s spirit can live forever within you. Dad, you will always be a part of me and I will continue to live out your legacy.”
Meanwhile, Melissa paid tribute to her father-in-law saying, “Not only was he an amazing film & television actor, comedian and author but he overcame adversity after a terrible accident years ago leaving him with a broken neck and injured spinal cord.”
Fans send their prayers
Besides Police Academy, Art was also famous for starring in films such as They Only Kill Their Masters, The Heartbreak Kid and They Shoot Horses, don’t they? among others.
On hearing about his demise, fans have taken to Twitter to send their prayers.
One wrote, “One of the great bits ever. Ever. Funny man. RIP”
