When it was announced that The Matrix would be returning for a fourth film in 2021, it’s safe to say that there was plenty of trepidation and excitement among fans.
On September 9th, the first trailer for The Matrix Resurrections hit our screens and many viewers were quick to notice the absence of a key character, Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus.
As such, the trailer has sparked plenty of questions with many fans asking why Laurence Fishburne won’t be in The Matrix 4.
Laurence Fishburne isn’t in The Matrix 4
That’s right, one of the key cast members in the original Matrix trilogy, Laurence Fishburne, won’t be returning in The Matrix Resurrections.
The 60-year-old actor has not hidden that fact either as he was quick to reveal that he had not been asked to reprise the role of Morpheus. That is unless he’s been bound to secrecy about a surprise return.
Speaking to Vulture in August 2020, Laurence Fishburne said: “I have not been invited. Maybe that will make me write another play. I’m looking for the blessing in that. I wish them well. I hope it’s great.”
And in a later interview with Collider, Fishburne added: You’d have to ask Lana Wachowski why, because I don’t have an answer for that.”
Opinion: Why is the Morpheus we know not in The Matrix 4?
There could be an endless amount of reasons why the only returning characters from the original trilogy are Neo and Trinity.
Our theory stems from the film’s title, Resurrections, and how both Neo and Trinity were apparently killed off in The Matrix Revolutions and that this new film will explore what happens after their deaths.
In the trailer, we see some flashes of Neo’s body being worked on by machines – a Neo whose eyes are burnt out as they were at the end of Revolutions.
As such, we suspect that while Neo and Trinity’s bodies have been destroyed, their minds live on and have been placed in a new version of the Matrix. This is far from impossible as we got hints in the original trilogy that there have been multiple versions of the Matrix over the years and this could be the birth of a new one.
The reason why Laurence Fishburne doesn’t return as Morpheus is that his character managed to survive the events of the original trilogy and the climactic battle of Zion, therefore he’s still alive in the real world and not this new version of the Matrix.
However, while Fishburne may not be reprising his role, questions have been raised about Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character as it’s been rumoured and heavily implied in the trailer that he will be playing a younger version of Morpheus.
The Matrix Resurrections will arrive in cinemas and on HBO Max in the US on December 22nd, 2021.
