English singer Phil Collins has just opened up about his declining health.
During an interview with BBC Breakfast, the former Genesis drummer revealed that he can “barely hold a drumstick”.
“I’m kind of physically challenged a bit, which is very frustrating because I’d love to be playing up there with my son,” he said.
When asked if he could do any drumming at all, he continued: “No. I’d love to, but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand. So there are certain physical things that get in the way.”
The rock band are going on tour later this year, but Phil will just be singing, not drumming, due to his ongoing health problems.
What illness does he actually have? And why can’t he drum anymore?
Phil Collins damaged his vertebrae
After gaining huge success in the music industry in the 80s and 90s, the latter half of Phil Collins’ career has been flooded with health problems.
Whilst touring with Genesis in 2007, he injured the vertebrae in his neck which has led to severe nerve damage and is the reason why he can’t drum anymore.
He underwent surgery in 2009 to repair the issue, but this only made it worse and caused him to lose feeling in his fingers and hands, meaning he was unable to play musical instruments.
Phil wasn’t particularly concerned about not being able to drum anymore as he was nearing the end of his career anyway, but he told ABC News:
“I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again. I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely and or building things for my kids.”
In 2021, he is almost completely unable to use his hands, and he’s opened up in the past about how he has developed depression because of it.
Phil Collins’ other illnesses
Nerve damage isn’t the only health issue Phil deals with on a daily basis.
In 2017, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and developed a diabetic abscess on his foot.
During the same year, he also developed something called ‘foot drop’ which means he has to wear orthopaedic shoes.
The foot drop cause him to slip over in his hotel room during the night and hit his head on a chair, which forced him to cancel two shows.
He also suffers from acute pancreatitis, which is where the pancreas becomes inflames and swollen.
Speaking about it at a press conference in 2016, he said: “Within months you’re drinking vodka from the fridge in the morning and falling over in front of the kids, you know.”
“But it was something I lived through, and I was lucky to live through it and get through it. I was very close to dying,” he continued.
Fans became concerned in 2019
Phil Collins has been dealing with many illnesses for years, but it wasn’t until 2019 that fans became incredibly concerned for him.
The musician began looking very frail and relying on a wheelchair and walking stick to get around.
Then, whilst performing a show in Charlotte, North Carolina on his Still Not Dead Yet Live! tour, he fell backwards on his chair whilst on stage.
He carried on the show, but it was clear at that point that he singer had become very weak, and he was pictured using a wheelchair the same day.
