When Star Trek: Picard made its debut in January 2020, fans and critics were hugely enamoured, with the series receiving an impressive 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Before season 1 had even aired, Picard earned the green light of renewal and fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the forthcoming instalment.
But just what do we know about the upcoming Picard season 2, what will its plot entail and is there a release date?
Star Trek: Picard recap and season 2 plot
Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard continues the story of Jean-Luc Picard 20 years after his appearance in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis.
The first season saw a now-retired Picard return to action as he and a rag-tag crew worked to uncover a conspiracy that aimed to suppress all synthetic life, a storyline which concluded with Picard technically dying and having his consciousness transferred into a new, synthetic body.
Season 2, however, looks set to explore the realm of time travel, something the Star Trek franchise has delved into several times before.
In this instance, however, the god-like being known as Q is behind the altered timeline as he’s morphed the federation into a totalitarian organisation.
So, in the spirit of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Picard and his rag-tag crew must travel back to our present-day, with the apparent help of the Borg Queen, in order to help put things right.
Season 2 release date
Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard will be released in February 2022, although no exact date has been revealed at the time of writing.
The release window was confirmed in the second trailer for Picard season 2 which was unveiled on September 8th, 2021 as part of a Star Trek preview event, which also saw new teasers released for Star Trek: Discovery as well as new arrivals Star Trek: Prodigy and Strange New Worlds.
Filming on season 2 began back in February 2021 and production is taking place back-to-back with season 3, which has also been given the green light.
New cast additions for season 2
It wouldn’t be the new season of a TV show if Picard didn’t add some new cast members for the upcoming episodes and season 2 doesn’t disappoint with the cast members announced so far.
As mentioned earlier, Q is set to reappear in the Star Trek universe and fans will be pleased to know that John de Lancie will be reprising his role.
The actor first appeared back in the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and has returned to the role of Q on several occasions.
Another returning face in Picard season 2 will be Whoopi Goldberg who, according to Deadline, will be reprising her role as Guinan from The Next Generation as well as the films Generations and Nemesis.
And the final new addition to have been announced to date is Annie Wersching who will be taking on the role of the Borg Queen in season 2.
Annie Wersching is actually another returning Star Trek cast member as she appeared in one episode of 2002’s Star Trek: Enterprise.
