Rangers have high hopes for summer signing Fashion Sakala – and he has now been backed for success by former Celtic defender Jack Hendry.
The Gers wanted to add more attacking firepower over the summer, and set up a bargain deal to lure Sakala over from Oostende.
Sakala’s contract in Belgium was coming to an end, so Rangers struck a pre-contract agreement to sign him for absolutely nothing.
The Zambian ace hit 31 goals and 10 assists in 102 outings for Oostende, of which 16 goals and five assists came last season.
Rangers fans were excited about the speedy forward, but they’re yet to really see him play a big role under Steven Gerrard.
Sakala has only played 132 minutes of first-team action in all competitions, and it may be a while before he really gets up to speed with the Gers.
If anybody associated with the Scottish game knows about Sakala, it’s Scotland international Hendry given that they played together at Oostende.
Hendry, who was sold by Celtic to Oostende and then moved on to Club Brugge having starred in Belgium, has now offered his view on Sakala.
Hendry told the Daily Record that he thinks Sakala could end up being a ‘really, really shrewd’ signing for Rangers, praising his great pace whilst predicting that Sakala will thrive at Ibrox eventually.
“Getting Fashion on a free could be a really, really shrewd signing from Rangers,” said Hendry. “Rangers are getting a player who has already shown that he will work extremely hard for the team. He has great pace and is really quick and that is a huge weapon but there is so much more to his game.”
“He showed at KV Oostende last season that when he gets a chance he will take it. Fashion is also a player who excites the fans and gets them off their seats. I have to say he will thrive in that sort of atmosphere, playing in front of a full Ibrox crowd,” he added.
