With ‘The Matrix’ set to return eighteen years after fans waved goodbye to the trilogy, fans have been left wondering one thing…

Did Morpheus die?

Read on to find out!

Here’s a rundown of everything we know so far…

In ‘The Matrix’ films Morpheus is the captain of the Nebuchadnezzar, which is a hovercraft of the human forces of the last human city, Zion. He was actually once a human living inside the Matrix until he was freed.

In the first film, Morpheus successfully find and monitors Thomas A. Anderson AKA Neo. Morpheus offers Neo a choice of ingesting a red pill, which will allow him to be traced in the real world, or a blue pill which will leave Neo in the Matrix to live and believe how he chooses.

In the second film, ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ Morpheus is confident that the war is coming to an end. He convinces one hovercraft ship to remain in the Matrix to await contact from the Oracle, despite orders from Zion for all ships to return to the city. His actions meant that he then had to incur the wrath of Jason Locke…

In the final film, ‘The Matrix Revolutions’, Morpheus becomes dispirited and cannot fathom what may happen to Zion and its people. He renews his conviction that he and Neo could still save Zion. In Chapter 1.2 of ‘The Matrix Online’ Morpheus grows impatient with the machines, and subsequently starts terrorist attacks throughout the Matrix. Morpheus plants a bomb and ultimately ‘dies’ by a masked gunman repeatedly shooting at him.

Did Morpheus die in the trilogy?

CBR reported that Laurence Fishburne AKA Morpheus was not invited back to reprise his role as the revolutionary caption of the Nebuchadnezzar. This revelation left fans both understandably upset and confused.

Fans have been speculating that Morpheus actually faked his death due to the fact that a few redpills received an email from their leader saying that he would ‘fade away’ into hiding before he is murdered. Not only that but similar to Neo, Morpheus’ remains were never recovered which means that he could still be out there in the real world.

In terms of the upcoming film, ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ we are yet to find out who Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays yet with fans believing that he could be a younger version of Morpheus. It was reported in 2019 that Mateen would be taking on the role, despite Warner Bros not confirming the casting at the time.

Fans React to ‘The Matrix Resurrection’ Trailer

While another wrote: ‘Me explaining how in The Matrix Online we learn that resurrection is totally possible and the first mission was to gather all of The One’s data to try and resurrect Neo which ultimately lead to Morpheus’ death and so it’s very likely The Matrix 4 is actually a sequel to an MMO.’

One Twitter user was particularly distraught at Laurence Fishburne not reprising his role saying: ‘Kind of disappointed that Laurence Fishburne didnt return for the Matrix Resurrection.’
