Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be big fans of Zenit St Petersburg attacker Sardar Azmoun – a player Arsenal allegedly had a close eye on.
Many expected Tottenham to make a move for a new striker this summer, especially with lingering question marks over the future of Harry Kane.
When Kane decided he would be staying at Tottenham, Fabio Paratici stopped searching for a striker – but that may be because he has a bargain signing in mind.
Zenit St Petersburg ace Azmoun told soccer.ru that Tottenham were one of the teams to make a move for him over the summer window.
Lyon, Roma and Bayer Leverkusen were also keen, but Zenit rejected all the interest in order to keep Azmoun in Russia.
The thing is that Tottenham may simply position themselves to sign Azmoun for free.
The Iranian’s contract expires at the end of the season, and if Paratici loved anything at Juventus, it was signing players on free transfers.
With 19 goals and six assists in 24 league games last season, Azmoun had an outstanding season and has even excelled on the international stage with 34 goals in 52 caps.
Azmoun could be a bargain addition for Tottenham, but maybe Arsenal will have another look too.
Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are expected to go next summer, meaning they will need another striker.
What’s interesting is that Mikel Arteta showed an interest in Azmoun last year, and even contacted Andrey Arshavin to discuss him according to Area Napoli.
Arshavin played with Arteta at Arsenal and remains a key man behind the scenes at Zenit, so the Gunners were seemingly doing close research on him.
Seeing Azmoun head to Tottenham for free may sting after putting in that work, but there is still plenty of time for Arsenal to get back into the race.
