Inter Milan have held positive talks with Sampdoria over a potential transfer for reported Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa target Mikkel Damsgaard, according to Calciomercato.
The Nerazzurri have recently deepened their dialogue with the Blucerchiati, and received positive reactions from the Genoa natives’ hierarchy. Inter and Sampdoria share a strong relationship that has forged several transfers in the recent past, including Milan Skriniar.
Damsgaard is under contract at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium until 2024, but has raised doubts over his long-term future. Yet Sampdoria would demand no less than €35m (£30m) for the 21-year-old, which Inter would currently struggle to afford, though is the only true sore note.
Damsgaard is a very popular player, however, with Inter Milan one of several clubs – with Tottenham and Aston Villa – chasing the Sampdoria star. Calciomercato reported in August that the Premier League rivals were leading the race to sign the 11-cap Denmark maestro.
Per Calciomercato, Juventus are also monitoring the winger, as they strive to sign younger options and reduce their wage bill. Inter may now throw a spanner into their Serie A rivals’ plans, as they will pay close attention to how he manages against their defence on Sunday.
Simone Inzaghi’s side visit Sampdoria following the international break looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Roberto D’Aversa’s Blucerchiati, meanwhile, are winless and yet to score after two games, both of which Damsgaard started.
Inter accept Damsgaard is still a raw talent, but have no doubts over his technical ability. The forward scored twice and offered four assists in 35 Serie A appearances after joining Sampdoria for €7m last year. He also scored twice and assisted once during Euro 2020.
Will Inter Milan make Aston Villa and Tottenham rue not signing Damsgaard?
Damsgaard and Sampdoria may have started the domestic season slowly, but the forward Inter Milan, Tottenham and Aston Villa admire has shown his quality with Denmark during the international break. He has offered three assists in as many World Cup qualifiers.
His goal against England at Euro 2020 was also a sensational free-kick, and his gliding runs were a constant threat. If Damsgaard displays that on Sunday when Sampdoria host Inter, the San Siro hierarchy will undoubtedly start searching for funds. Potentially, then, denying Tottenham and Aston Villa another shot at signing the playmaker Kasper Schmeichel lauds.
“What a player,” the Leicester City goalkeeper enthused, via One Football. “We have seen it in training, and the fact that he produces what he produces in the matches, it is fantastic.
“I told Mikkel Damsgaard that I had the feeling that he would score. He was so close to Belgium and played such a fantastic match. So, I thought it was the perfect time for him to get his goal. Yes, he was phenomenal.”
