John Mulaney sat down with Seth Meyers on Late Night with Seth Meyers yesterday, and he had a lot to say.
The comedian, actor, writer and producer confirmed that he is expecting a baby with actress Olivia Munn.
“I got into this relationship that’s been really beautiful with someone incredible. And we’re having a baby together. I was nervous when I was about to say the news!” he said.
Then, he opened up about his recent battle with substance abuse. Here’s what he said…
John Mulaney opens up about drug addiction
On Tuesday (September 7th), John spoke to Seth Meyers about his hellish year battling drug addiction.
As reported by Page Six, he had a cocaine and alcohol addiction, and he has often been open about his struggles with substance abuse in the past.
“I went to rehab in September, I got out in October, I moved out of my home from my ex-wife, I hosted Saturday Night Live on Halloween, I relapsed on drugs, I continued using drugs,” he explained to Seth.
John started drinking when he was just 13-years-old and first decided to go sober at the age of 23, and was sober for many years after that.
However, things got out of control again during quarantine in 2020, which is why he was checked into a rehab facility
He then revealed that Seth staged an intervention and sent him back to rehab in Pennsylvania for two months.
“I got out in February, lived in Sober Living for another month and a half,” he continued.
He went into detail about the intervention
Still with a smile on his face, John further addressed Seth Meyers’ intervention.
“When I opened the door, I knew it was an intervention, that’s how bad of a drug problem I had,” he said.
John thought he was going for dinner at his college friend’s apartment, but Seth had actually planned the intervention with a professional interventionist.
After being two hours late because he was getting a haircut, he quickly realised it was an intervention and willingly accepted the help, very aware of his bad drug problem.
He also told Seth that he has some regrets from the intervention, including the fact that he insisted he was sober at the time and wanted credit for the days he didn’t do drugs.
“I’m so grateful to you [Seth] and everyone else for saving my life,” he said.
Olivia Munn helped him
John then went on to explain how meeting Olivia also saved him.
“Then in the spring I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia,” he said.
“I met her actually for the first time at your [Seth’s] wedding, through Alexi, your wife,” he said.
“She got to date me right out of recovery, which is what they call a reverse catch,” he joked before saying: “This is a very very lucky thing to have met this woman.”
