What is the greatest TV series ever made?

It’s an argument that can last hours and it’s hard to imagine you and your pals all agreeing on one title.

You can expect the line-up of usual suspects to be cited – Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Mad Men, Twin Peaks – but perhaps the most common answer to the question is The Wire.

The American crime-drama premiered back in 2002 and concluded with its fifth season in 2008. Although it wasn’t as universally adored by the masses at the time of airing, the legacy it has earned over the last decade is simply remarkable.

It has aged like fine wine, resonating with modern audiences in its exploration of timeless themes and masterfully orchestrated character arcs.

Audiences have recently been reminded of its genius in the wake of Michael K. Williams’ (he played Omar Little) tragic passing. Many first-time audiences are also compelled to check out his work on the HBO series at long last. So, here’s where to watch The Wire…

Where to watch The Wire: UK and US streaming

Being an HBO production, you can stream all five seasons of The Wire on the HBO Max streaming service in the US.

Subscription costs just $14.99 a month and, considering it’s probably one of the most addictive shows ever crafted, you’ll likely be able to work through it in a month. However, there’s plenty of great content on the service to entice you into sticking around.

Unfortunately, they don’t offer a free trial, and what’s even more unfortunate is that it isn’t available in the UK. However, Sky customers can access the entire series through streaming.

Additionally, if you’re not with Sky you can instead sign up for a NOW TV subscription, with all five seasons streaming until long into the future; December 2025, to be exact.

NOW is currently offering a 7-day free trial to new customers. As this isn’t exactly enough time to binge five seasons of TV, it’s worth acknowledging that your membership automatically renews afterward for a low price of £9.99.

The more expensive option comes courtesy of Amazon Video, with seasons priced from £19.99; the series is not included as part of your Prime Video membership.

Is The Wire on Netflix?

No, The Wire is not available to stream over on Netflix.

While this is definitely a shame, it’s fortunate that there are a number of streaming options in the aforementioned territories.

Considering The Wire is right at home on HBO Max and Sky in the US and UK right now, it’s hard to imagine it being added to Netflix in the near future. So, if you were planning to play the waiting game, you’d be wise to check it out another way instead.

Needless to say, it’s worth the subscription fees.
