Celtic had a very close look at Thomas Robert earlier this year – but he has now made a move to Belgium instead having starred in Scotland.
Robert, the son of former Newcastle United star Laurent Robert, was considered a hot prospect at Montpellier before making a curious move.
Robert signed for Airdrieonians, playing in the third tier of Scottish football – and he unsurprisingly looked a class above.
Back in February of this year, Celtic decided to act on months of interest in Robert by offering him a trial at their Lennoxtown training ground.
The Frenchman, who can play out wide or as a playmaker, ended up being compared to Andrew Robertson by his agent Paul Tait.
Tait felt that Robert could have a similar path to stardom from Scotland’s lower leagues to a huge club, but Celtic chose not to sign him.
The 21-year-old has though made a new move, as he has jetted off to Belgium in order to sign for Royal Excel Mosucron.
Robert has signed a two-year deal and will now look to make the grade in Belgium’s second tier having dazzled in Scotland.
Playing under Belgian legend Enzo Scifo as well as the Mpenza brother Emile and Mbo, this could be a great step for Robert – and Celtic would be wise to keep tabs on his progress in Belgium.
