Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after Charlton announced the signing of Pape Souare on a one-year deal.

What’s the story?

Well, the 31-year-old spent time playing with Crystal Palace’s Under-23 side over the summer, in order to keep his fitness up after leaving Troyes.

Souare then spent time training with Charlton – Crystal Palace’s south London rivals – where he impressed Nigel Adkins.

He arrives at the Valley at a good time, with the Addicks in desperate need of a reliable left-back as they look to earn promotion back to the Championship.

Souare made 63 appearances for Crystal Palace, starting the FA Cup final against Manchester United in 2016.

He was an excellent, and important, first-team player, although his career was sadly hit hard by a near-fatal car crash that same year.

They may be rivals, but the Eagles have done their fellow south Londoners a favour with this signing.

As aforesaid, Patrick Vieira’s side took Souare in from the cold, allowed him to train at their Beckenham base, and also take part in Under-23 games.

Clearly, that helped the defender reached the required level to pass his medical checks at Charlton, so he owes Crystal Palace a lot.

In truth, Souare could still be performing at Premier League level were it not for his car crash, while he’s also amassed 26 caps for Senegal.

He has a huge amount of experience, and should be an extremely useful player for Adkins this season.
