Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Alberto Moreno revealed that he was offered a five-year contract in 2019.

What’s the story?

Well, after the 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League final, the left-back’s contract expired.

Eventually, Moreno decided to return to Spain and join Villarreal on a free transfer, after racking up 141 appearances for the Reds.

However, that was after the club tried to get him to stay until 2024.

Speaking to El Periodico Mediterraneo, the former Sevilla defender said: “In my fifth year, I was offered to renew, but for another five years. I said no. We’d had many years in England. I have three children and spoke with my wife, and we decided that the best thing was to return to Spain. I just wanted to go back to Spain”.

At the time, Moreno was on the bench nearly every week, with Andy Robertson displaying an incredible amount of consistency.

Despite that, Jürgen Klopp clearly wanted the 4-cap Spain international to stay at Anfield.

We simply can’t understand the decision to offer Moreno a new five-year contract.

As aforesaid, the 29-year-old had lost his place to Robertson, and even when he did get onto the pitch, he definitely had a mistake or two in him.

In truth, Moreno could not be relied on in the big games. Even James Milner played ahead of him on the rare occasion that Robertson was missing.

Perhaps a one-year extension might’ve made sense, in order to preserve the defender’s value and potentially sell him for a fee.

However, to offer him five more years, when he was even behind a centre-midfielder in the left-back pecking order, is incredibly strange.

Nevertheless, let’s see what the Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying after Moreno made the revelation…
