Tottenham Hotspur wrapped up their summer business on Tuesday with the signing of Emerson Royal.
The former Barcelona right-back has left Camp Nou to join Spurs in a £26 million deal.
He became Tottenham’s fifth summer signing but hasn’t technically arrived at the club yet.
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Emerson completed his medical with the Lilywhites in Spain instead of London.
But the 22-year-old, who could make his debut against Crystal Palace next week, has sent a tweet to Tottenham’s official account, claiming he can’t wait to touch down in North London.
What an upgrade this for the Lilywhites.
It’s been four years since Tottenham have had a reliable defender at right-back.
Since Kyle Walker joined Manchester City, Spurs have tried replacing him with Kieran Trippier, Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty.
But Emerson just might be the man to finally prove an adequate replacement for the England international.
Trippier, Aurier and Doherty have their uses, but none of them are anywhere near as well-rounded as Walker, in terms of being an asset in both defence and attack.
Emerson, however, may well be that man and it’ll be fascinating to see how he fares under Nuno Espirito Santo this season.
