Two years after their failed first attempt, Leeds United have finally signed Dan James.
The Welshman is the Whites’ newest signing, and at £25m, you’d have to imagine that he’s not just going to be a benchwarmer.
So, how will he fit into the Leeds team? After all, Raphinha is currently the first-choice on the right-wing and it’s hard to see any player usurping the Brazilian star at this moment in time.
Well, there are signs to suggest that Raphinha could be in line for a position change.
Indeed, after he first signed for the club Bielsa noted that he could one day play in a number 10 role, while Phil Hay has recently claimed that the idea of switching Raphinha’s position has been on the Whites’ manager’s mind.
Unfortunately, a move to the middle for Raphinha would have a serious knock-on effect for a couple of players in Leeds’ squad, and it’s fair to say that Tyler Roberts will be the big loser.
Roberts has already been struggling to break into the starting XI at Leeds ahead of Rodrigo and Mateusz Klich, and with Raphinha now perhaps also in his way, it will be all-but-impossible for him to get a chance.
Roberts isn’t a bad player. In fact, he’s even been labelled as ‘brilliant’ in the past, but the amount of depth Leeds now have in his position will make it tough for him to get many minutes.
James’ arrival will certainly change things at Elland Road, and the big loser looks as though it will be Roberts.
