Some Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been reacting on social media, after Pau Torres shared why he rejected a summer transfer to north London to stay at Villarreal, via Marca.

The defender has spoken publicly on his decision to remain, while confirming that he was made aware of Spurs’ interest. Tottenham explored bringing Torres to the Premier League, as Managing Director Fabio Paratici sought to improve Nuno Espirito Santo’s defence.

Along with loaning Cristian Romero from Atalanta with a £47m purchase option, AS report Tottenham agreed another €55m (£47m) deal with Villarreal for Torres. But the move fell through, as the 2020 Olympic finalist did not want to leave the Estadio de la Ceramica.

Villarreal were open to selling Torres to Tottenham if the centre-half wanted to test himself in the Premier League. El Submarino Amarillo knew the 24-year-old offered a strong market opportunity to receive a strong fee that could be reinvested. But Villarreal is Torres’ home.

“I was informed of Tottenham’s interest, but I was clear from the first moment what I wanted,” Torres said. “I decided calmly, I decided the best thing for me, and that was to continue at Villarreal. We have many challenges this season that I am passionate about and very important goals. It didn’t take long for me to decide.”

What On Earth Is Going On At Benfica?!

Torres joined Villarreal in his youth and has risen through the ranks to make 88 first-team appearances. He started all 33 of his La Liga outings last term as Unai Emery’s side finished fourth. He also helped El Submarino Amarillo win the Europa League, keeping a clean sheet at Arsenal in the semi-final second-leg. While also scoring three goals in all competitions.

Tottenham fans react to Torres comments on staying at Villarreal

But while some Tottenham fans respected Torres’ decision to stay at Villarreal, others were less saddened to miss out. That’s because they feel the form Davinson Sanchez is showing under Nuno proves the proposed £47m deal was unnecessary.

Mostly, however, Tottenham fans praised Torres’ commitment to Villarreal and wanting to stay at his hometown side. The £54k-a-week defender has only spent one term away from the club in his senior career. He spent 2018/19 on loan with Malaga, featuring 40 times.
