Netflix has released an exciting teaser image for their upcoming live action adaptation of the popular manga and anime series, One Piece!
One Piece remains the most popular, beloved and longest-running manga series in the entire world.
With over 490 million copies in circulation, 989 anime episodes and 99 published volumes, the only thing that the One Piece franchise didn’t have was a live action series.
However, all that is about to change thanks to the legendary creator of the series Eiichiro Oda teaming up with Netflix to bring Luffy and his crew to life!
One Piece is getting a live action series…
- The iconic One Piece manga series is getting a live action adaption from streaming giant Netflix, who recently teased the series by uploading an image of the finished script.
In July 2017, the chief editor for the Weekly Shone Jump magazine announced that an American live action adaptation would be produced.
Over the next three years, fans became more and more impatient with the lack of information on the series, before creator Eiichiro Oda confirmed that Netflix would be at the helm in January 2020.
Speaking on the wait for new information, Oda explained that “I know I announced the production of this back in 2017, but these things take time!”
“Preparations have been slowly progressing behind the scenes, and it seems I can finally make the big announcement: Netflix, the world’s leading streaming entertainment service, will be lending us their tremendous production support! This is so encouraging!” – Eiichiro Oda, via Netflix Geeked Twitter page.
On September 3rd, 2021, a teaser image of the finished script was released on social media, with the official One Piece Netflix page captioning the post, “No matter how hard or how impossible it is, never lose sight of your goal. Don’t lose sight of your beliefs, no matter how difficult or impossible.”
Alongside this image, the official logo for the series was revealed as well as the title of the first episode, ‘Romance Dawn.’
The first season will consist of 10 episodes and according to What’s On Netflix, will “cover the recruitment of Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji and end with Luffy’s fight against Arlong.”
The series will be produced by Tomorrow Studios, who have worked on the hit Netflix series ‘Snowpiercer’ and the Amazon Prime show ‘Hanna’ – the production company are also working on Netflix’s upcoming Cowboy Bebop adaptation.
At the time of writing, no members of the One Piece live action adaptation cast have been officially confirmed. However, we do know that production has indeed started, with filming taking place in Cape Town, South Africa.
“We have basically all 10 scripts written. We will start casting when we go back. My suspicion is June 1, but we will start doing our casting. We have a lot of names that we’re talking about, and we should be in production in September. We have been working very closely with Sensei Oda. So, we’re going to get started, and this one is very big. I mean, Snowpiercer was a big production; this is even bigger.” – Marty Adelstein, via Syfy.
Considering the lack of information on filming and casting, fans should prepare themselves for a long wait before the series debuts on Netflix.
At an early approximation, the One Piece live action series could release in Summer 2022, specifically on July 22nd, in accordance with the 25th anniversary of the series’ manga debut.
