Speaking on the Where’s Jeff? Podcast, Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has been giving his view on Granit Xhaka, and he hasn’t held back.
The midfielder has played in every game for the Gunners in the Premier League so far this term, and he’s yet to be on the winning side.
Xhaka was sent off at the weekend against Manchester City, and Nicholas was left absolutely seething by his recklessness, labelling him a joker.
What’s been said?
Nicholas didn’t hold back when he was discussing Xhaka.
“I tell you what he’s doing, he’s doing what he’s always done. He’s played the joker card and he is the joker of our club. How he can manipulate Roma, I would have gotten a personal private jet and dropped him myself, and then he signs a new contract,” Nicholas said.
“I’m being supportive of Arteta and I’ve got a thin case, but if you look at the captain Xhaka, that is a cop-out, he’s saying ‘I’m trying my best fans, but if I get a red card and get sent off I’m not truly upset, but I might look it.’ It’s an absolute camouflage, and it sums everything up that’s going on at this football club at the moment.”
Xhaka has captained Arsenal at times this season, but he’s simply not a leader.
The Swiss midfielder is too much of a hot-head and too much of a liability to be a key player for a club of Arsenal’s stature, and it showed again this weekend.
Xhaka hasn’t picked up 11 career red cards by accident, and while Nicholas may have been a bit harsh, his ‘joker’ label isn’t inaccurate.
Simply put, The Gunners need to get their act together, and Xhaka needs to be more disciplined.
