Manchester City youngster Gavin Bazunu had a moment to remember last night as the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper denied Cristian Ronaldo from the penalty spot.

Portugal were awarded a spot-kick just 15 minutes into their FIFA World Cup qualifer against Ireland. Ronaldo stepped up to take the penalty, but the now-Manchester United’s effort from 12-yards out was denied by Bazunu.

Whilst Ireland lost the match 2-1, it was a hugely crucial moment for the Boys in Green. Ronaldo would get his revenge, scoring two goals late on to become the highest international goalscorer in the history of men’s football.

Indeed, the penalty save will be a moment that will remain with Bazunu for most of his career. The 19-year-old keeper signed for City in 2019 from Shamrock Rovers. The teenager is spending the season on loan with Portsmouth.

Bazunu impressed all night keeping Portugal at bay. And his penalty save against Ronaldo was, as you would expect, a huge hit with City fans on social media.

The former Juventus star was reportedly in talks to join Pep Guardiola’s side last week. Ronaldo wanted to leave Italy, and City were a viable option for the Portuguese star.

But as we know, United swooped in to re-sign the 36-year-old attacker from Juventus. Yet despite this, City fans enjoyed that one of their own denied Ronaldo from the penalty spot.
