Tottenham defender Matt Doherty suffered late, late heartache on Wednesday night as Cristiano Ronaldo, well did what Ronaldo does.

The Manchester United superstar scored an 89th and 96th-minute headed brace to help Portugal beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in their World Cup qualifier in Faro.

Tottenham’s £15 million man, Doherty (Guardian) was on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes and he shared on Instagram that it was a ‘brutal’ end for his country after Ronaldo’s heroics.

Despite feeling a little down, and understandably so, Erik Lamela issued this message to his former Spurs teammate: “Number seven,” added with eyes hearts emojis. “Keep going bro.”

Doherty will be hoping that is the only heartache he suffers at the hands, or even the head, of Ronaldo.

The 36-year-old has returned to England’s top-flight and he will be looking to cause damage across the Premier League upon his return this season.

Both Tottenham and Manchester United will lock horns in North London on October 30, and Ronaldo will already be planning to write his script.

Nuno Espirito Santo have already beaten one Manchester club in their own backyard and they will be hoping to add another to their scalp.

It seems as though Ronaldo will play a forward role this season, so that’s a job for the centre-back’s across the country to deal with, especially his killer instinct inside that penalty box.

That’s exactly what he showcased yesterday because his two headers were deadly, brutal and a prime reason as to why he has been one of the best to have graced the game.
