Tottenham Hotspur didn’t sign a striker before the transfer deadline, meaning Son Heung-min may play there at times under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nuno seemingly wanted Adama Traore as another option out wide, but Tottenham appeared to duck out of a striker race when Harry Kane committed his future to the club.

Kane remains the only natural senior striker at the club, and whilst there are high hopes for Dane Scarlett, it would be early to throw him into Premier League action.

So who steps up if Kane is out?

When Kane wasn’t considered for a start in the first two games of the season, Nuno went with Son as his central striker, flanked by Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn.

Son scored against Manchester City on the opening day of the season and has often fared well in that role, even if his natural role is as a left-sided winger.

The South Korean has now hit at least 18 goals across all competitions in each of his last five seasons, proving himself as a reliable goalscoring threat.

Now, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has suggested that Nuno does actually see Son as being a striker.

His predecessor Jose Mourinho didn’t think that at all, and it’s notable that he brought in more of a classic centre forward in Carlos Vinicius.

Nuno didn’t want that, believing that Son could be like Cristiano Ronaldo and move from being a winger to a striker at some stage in his career.

“Nuno sees Son as a striker, whereas Mourinho didn’t,” said Gold.

“I think there’s a feeling among Nuno and Paratici that, a little bit like Ronaldo – I’m not saying he’s like Ronaldo – but in terms of the positional movement, they feel that Son, could if he wanted, move from being a wide player to being a more through the middle player,” he added.
