Some films should come with a warning.

If The Father were to come with one, perhaps it would be “bring a bigger box of tissues.” Of course, it doesn’t come with this caution, but we’re here to tell you that you’ll need one.

Looking back over the films which earned Academy Awards nominations earlier this year, the likes of Nomadland and Minari earned serious buzz, going on to snag wins; Nomadland proving to be the biggest triumph.

However, many were surprised to see that Chadwick Boseman didn’t land Best Actor for his impeccable performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Instead, the prestigious honour went to Anthony Hopkins for his heartbreaking turn in Florian Zeller’s psychological drama.

It arguably provided the night’s most unexpected moment, encouraging plenty of people to seek out the film. Needless to say, majority audiences were blown away.

If you were unable to see it during its theatrical window, you’ll be pleased to know you can now check it out from the comfort of your own home. That means nobody has to see your flood of tears – a surefire bonus.

So, here’s where the film The Father is streaming…

The Father film: Streaming options

  • The Father is available to stream on such major platforms as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Sky Store, and Virgin TV GO.

It is not currently streaming on Netflix and is not included with a subscription to any services.

Over on Amazon Video, it is available to buy from £9.99, while DVD and Blu-ray options are also offered. Although unavailable to rent on Amazon at the moment, it’s likely that the option will be provided in the near future.

In the US, on the other hand, Amazon has it as a rental for just $2.99.

Considering what to expect, the film stars Anthony Hopkins as an aging man grappling with dementia under the care of his daughter, Anne (played by Olivia Colman, The Favourite).

It’s actually based on the director’s own 2021 play – Le Père – and serves as the second adaptation following the 2015 film Floride.

“I did not expect to get this award”

Reflecting on Anthony’s Oscar-win, it’s interesting to note that he wasn’t present at the ceremony itself to collect the award.

Why you may ask?

Well, like many others, he didn’t expect to win, with Chadwick Boseman being widely considered a sure thing.

In the wake of the bombshell, he posted a post-Oscars acceptance speech from his homeland in Wales:

“At 83 years of age, I did not expect to get this award, I really didn’t. I’m very grateful to the Academy – thank you. I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too early. Again, thank you all very much.”

He added: “I really did not expect this, I feel very privileged and honored, thank you.”

Celebrating the ensemble

While Anthony’s performance is the stand-out of the movie, there are some brilliant actors showcasing their talents alongside him.

It’s a small-scale production with a minimal cast, giving them all a chance to shine:

  • Olivia Colman as Anne
  • Rufus Sewell as Paul
  • Imogen Poots as Laura/Lucy
  • Olivia Williams as Catherine/Laura/Anne
  • Mark Gatiss as Bill/Paul
  • Ayesha Dharker as Dr. Sarai
  • Roman Zeller as Boy

The Father film is now streaming in the UK and US.
