West Ham United could miss out on a new left-back as deals for Nicolas Tagliafico and Zaidu Sanusi appear to have hit the buffers, according to reports.
David Moyes may have the division’s most productive left-back at his disposal but, if the Hammers are serious about building on an excellent 2020/21 campaign as well as making a fist of life in Europe, added depth in a number of key positions would be well received.
The ongoing absence of Arthur Masuaku means Aaron Cresswell is the only fit, senior, left-sided defender at Moyes’ disposal – unless you count the right-footed Ben Johnson.
Unfortunately, bringing in a face from elsewhere is proving easier said than done.
Sanusi just one left-back on the West Ham wish-list
According to Record (live blog, 12.28pm), West Ham have dropped out of the race for Sanusi after deciding Porto were demanding too much for the Nigeria international.
Sanusi, who has also been linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers, is understood to be valued in the region of £17 million.
That’s £5 million more than Ajax want for swashbuckling Argentine left-back Tagliafico.
West Ham have agreed a deal – and a four-year contract for Tagliafico – but TMW believes “bureaucratic” problems have suddenly put the transfer in doubt.
This comes after De Telegraaf reported West Ham had failed to agree personal terms with Tagliafico, their offer falling short of what the defender’s camp hoped for.
West Ham have already walked away from one deal this summer, backing away from Nikola Milenkovic following concerns over fees that would have to be paid to the Serb’s agent.
Clearly the Hammers won’t be bullied into spending more than they think is fair.
