Tim Vickery told Deadline Day on Sky Sports News (31/08/21 at 12:25 pm) that Everton are in ‘pole position’ to sign Salomon Rondon despite interest from West Ham.

The South American football expert thinks Everton are about to sign a player who is a real ‘handful’ and has a ‘solid track record’ during his career.

Rondon has worked with Rafa Benitez before when they were together during their pretty respectable spell at Newcastle.

And now the Venezuela international looks set to return to the Premier League and link up once again with Benitez.

“With big Salomon Rondon, West Ham also apparently interested in him,” said Vickery. “That seems like a no-brainer there.

“What you would be buying there is a vastly experienced back-ups striker. Rondon perhaps doesn’t score the goals he is perhaps capable of.

“But he has a solid track record wherever he has been really. Spain, Russia, Premier League with Newcastle and West Brom, China and then back to Russia. And a real physical handful for opposing defenders.

“A back-up striker and a move back to the Premier League looks likely with Everton in pole position and West Ham also interested.”

It’s clear that Rondon will be joining to play a back-up role, and in truth, given his experience and low transfer fee then it’s a win-win situation.

Plus, from Benitez’s perspective, he knows his game inside out and if Dominic Calvert-Lewin is missing, for one reason or another, then he still has that physical presence to bring on in the 31-year-old.

Whilst the Toffees aren’t going crazy during this transfer window because of FFP issues, these low-key signings might just benefit them.

They have previously splashed the cash in a wild fashion, and in truth, it’s stagnated them more than it has improved them.
