The finale of the highly emotional anime ‘To Your Eternity’ premieres later today, but will the hit series return for season 2 and if so, when?
One of the best things about anime is the variety; the option to go from one epic adventure series that makes you scream to a tragic love story that will make you cry.
The most emotional anime for the past two months has arguably been Brain’s Base’s hit adaptation of Fumetsu no Anata e, a.k.a. To Your Eternity.
The season finale of To Your Eternity, episode 20, airs on Crunchyroll at 5:30 PM BST on Monday, August 30th.
However, all that fans want to know is whether the heartbreak and adventures will continue into season 2 and if so, when could it release and what would the plot be?
To Your Eternity season 2…
- It’s good news for fans of To Your Eternity, the anime series has been renewed for season 2 only hours before the finale is set to launch!
The announcement was made today, August 30th, only two hours before season 1 episode 20 is scheduled to air via the official Japanese website.
Anime renewals are typically dependent on two factors; source material and popularity. Thankfully, To Your Eternity had enough of both to secure a second anime season.
According to Monsters and Critics, the season 1 finale of To Your Eternity is expected to adapt up until Volume 6 chapter 54 in the manga series. However, at the time of writing, a total of 15 Volumes across 137 chapters have been published in Japan – meaning that there is enough source material for at least one, if not two, more seasons of anime.
To Your Eternity has also received extremely positive reviews from both fans and critics alike from around the world. At the time of writing, the television series is scoring an impressive 9.0/10 on IMDB, 4.8/5 on Crunchyroll and 8.55/10 on MyAnimeList, with the latter consisting of more than 88,000 individual reviews.
However, the renewal was not the only piece of news released today, with the launch window for season 2 also being confirmed, see below.
To Your Eternity season 2: Release date…
In addition to confirming the sequel series, the official To Your Eternity Japanese website revealed that season 2 will release as part of the Fall anime slate in 2022.
Whilst a specific date was not revealed, fans should expect season 2 episode 1 to air on Monday, October 3rd or 10th – in accordance with the start of the Fall broadcasting slate.
This quick turnaround for season 2 is not only thanks to expert planning from the production team but the availability of source material. As previously mentioned, nine manga volumes are remaining to be adapted, which significantly shortens any production timeline.
However, fans should note that the episode number for the sequel season has not been confirmed. Season 1 consisted of an unusual 20-episodes run; will this continue into season 2 or will production switch to a more traditional split-cour broadcast?
Season 2 plot…
Spoiler warning: This section will give a brief overview of upcoming story arcs from the manga that are expected to be adapted in season 2.
Assuming that a second season would also cover a similar amount of source material, we would expect the following arcs to be adapted:
- The Guardians Arc: Chapter 56 – 62
- Uralis Kingdom Arc: Chapter 63 – 70
- Bennett Church Arc: Chapter 71 – 82
- Renril Arc: Chapter 83 – 116
Adapting up until chapter 116 would not only be enough for an entire anime season, but would also set up a potential third season that would cover the series’ ‘Second Act’ a.k.a the Present Era arc.
Opening the second season would likely be The Guardians Arc, where four decades have passed and Fushi has been alone on a deserted island ever since Pioran died of old age. However, he comes to meet both Hayase’s granddaughter and a group of ‘Guardians’ who see Fushi as a deity.
This article will be updated as soon as we know more information on To Your Eternity season 2.
