Liverpool are reportedly set to lose a hugely-influential figure at the club next summer – and a lot of Arsenal fans on Twitter are calling on their hierarchy to snap him up.
David Ornstein of The Athletic has reported that Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s sporting director, has told senior officials at Anfield that he’ll be leaving his role upon the expiration of his contract.
Edu performs in a similar position at Arsenal but fans of the Emirates Stadium club are nowhere near as happy with the Brazilian as the Reds’ faithful have been with Edwards down the years.
That’s because Edwards has masterminded quite a lot of blinding deals at Anfield.
Whether it’s incomings or outgoings, Edwards usually ensures that Liverpool are doing brilliant business and this acumen is particularly seen in departures.
In contrast, Arsenal haven’t been buying or selling particularly well under Edu since his arrival in the summer of 2019.
And here’s how some Gunners fans reacted to the news that Edwards is potentially off.
Bang for buck
You can understand why some Arsenal fans want new blood in regards to the recruitment because under Edu, it’s already getting quite stale.
For instance, the North Londoners have spent over £130 million on players this summer – the most of any club in Europe’s top five leagues – and yet Mikel Arteta’s side are rock bottom of the Premier League table.
After three games, they have scored no goals and conceded nine.
Spending £50 million on Ben White and £30 million on Aaron Ramsdale looked questionable business and although they could prove major successes at the Emirates, are either really worth a combined £80 million?
Edwards spent less than that on the additions of Sadio Mane [£30 million], Mohamed Salah [£34 million] and Andy Robertson [£8 million], three players who delivered a Premier League and Champions League title at Liverpool.
It’s worth pointing out that Edu has done some fine business, himself.
Coming from Brazil, it’s very likely that he was behind the signing of Gabriel Martinelli, who Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp labelled ‘talent of the century’ back in 2019 – and considering the Gunners got him for £6 million, that could be their former midfielder’s crowning achievement at the Emirates Stadium.
But Martinelli is the exception, not the rule.
For the most part, Arsenal’s recruitment since been questionable at best since Edu replaced Raul Sanllehi as the main man in terms of transfer decisions in North London.
Signing Willian on a free contract and giving him £220,000 per week was particularly dreadful business and the former Chelsea winger is already set to leave the club, after just one awful season.
If Arsenal can get Edwards – and it’s probably a big IF because far bigger clubs than the Gunners will be banging down his door in light of this development – then it could be a massive coup for Kroenke Sports Entertainment.
He is absolute gold dust and you need only look at how disappointed Liverpool fans are to know what a loss this is going to be.
